Light Skin VS Dark Skin: Music Edition

|

So, the African American community has always had issues and conversations around skin color. Some Blacks dislike others because their skin color is darker or lighter, some envy others because their skin color is darker or lighter. I am not sure if you noticed (hell for all I know you might be blind) but I am dark skinned and the Ivory is light skinned (Thus why we are the Ebony and Ivory). Because of this we have conversations about skin color and this sparked my curiousity, Do other races/ethnicities have these same thoughts about Blacks? That one shade may be better than the other? So I decided to take a look at the females in the Music Industry first.

So to start off I sat down and thought of all the light skinned R&B/Pop stars with INTERNATIONAL and AMERICAN success....Beyonce', Rihanna, Mariah, Alicia Keys. Now the next task I found way more difficult...I tried to name dark skinned R&P/Pop stars with international AND American success....I thought and thought. I finally said hey, Kelly Rowland has interational success. Then I remembered she has NO success in the US. #FAIL. How many international R&B/Pop Dark skinned Stars can you name?......I will wait.....

After this revelation, I started to try and measure talent. Talent can be based on people's opinion, this I understand. But some things are not arguable. For instance, who sings better, Fantasia or Rihanna? With out thinking twice, I am sure you all said Fantasia (If you didn't, please get you ears checked ASAP). Another one, who is a better SINGER, emphasis on singer, Beyonce or Jennifer Hudson? Clearly J. Hud. has a stronger voice and can out sing Bey any day (If you disagree, you are a STAN and I believe they have psychiatrists for that). Bey is the BEST ENTERTAINER out, but let's not get that confused with being the best singer!

So the question is, does the color of their skin has something to do with their success? Why isn't their a dark skinned female who has seen success both in American and Globally? These are questions we may never know the answer to, but after reading this post, I bet you won't stop thinking about it! Leave some comments, I wanna know you thoughts about it.

That's because fair skin is more commercial. In the past a singer's vocal talent was important. Patty La Belle,Aritha Franklin,Roberta Flack broke barriers with their vocals. These days its all about image. And the global consience has it that darker skin is not fabolous or alluring. Even the fairer black singers are bleaching their skin...beyonce,rihanna,mary j blidge. Black male singers can be dark(tall dark and handsome)...seal,luthor vandross, tyrese. Dark girls cant even get through the audition.
